When brown-shirted thugs gathered at the Alexander's front door during the boycott of Jewish businesses in 1933, Alfred's wartime commander, Otto Meyer, reminded the crowd of Alfred's services to his country during the First World War, and of the Iron Cross he had been awarded. They quickly dispersed.
